8 · The Periodic Table
8.1 Groups, Periods, Metals and Non-metals
Elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic (proton) number. A group is a vertical column (same number of outer electrons, similar properties). A period is a horizontal row (properties change gradually across it).
Metals are on the left and centre; non-metals on the right. Metals tend to lose electrons to form positive ions; non-metals tend to gain electrons to form negative ions.

8.2 Group I, Group VII and Group 0 Trends
| Group | Name | Key Property |
|---|---|---|
| Group I | Alkali Metals | Reactivity increases down the group |
| Group VII | Halogens | Reactivity decreases down the group |
| Group 0 (VIII) | Noble Gases | Full outer shell, unreactive/inert |
For Group I, going down, the outer electron is further away and more shielded — easier to lose, so reactivity increases. For Group VII, going down, the outer shell is further away, harder to attract an extra electron — reactivity decreases.
