📑 What is a Functional Group?

A functional group is a specific atom or group of atoms that gives a compound its characteristic chemical properties. It is the reactive part of the molecule.

✨ Why are Functional Groups Important?

  • Determine the chemical properties of a compound
  • Help in classification of organic compounds
  • Used in naming organic compounds (IUPAC)
  • Predict reactions of compounds
💡 Key Point: Different functional groups = Different chemical properties. Example: Ethanol (Alcohol) vs Ethanoic Acid (Carboxylic Acid) have different properties.

🏆 Functional Group Priority Order (IUPAC Naming)

When naming compounds, the highest priority functional group is used as the suffix:
